Tollington’s award-winning rapper Jahaziel Elliott has released his latest music video, shot on his housing estate.
Jahaziel Elliott’s new album, ‘Head’s Up’, will be released on November 19
The 37-year-old, who won 2008’s Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award for ‘Best Gospel Act’, is known locally as the team leader of Eden Tollington, working with deprived youths in the area.
The video for his latest song ‘They Don’t Know’, which can be watched below, was filmed mainly on the Andover Estate, off Hornsey Road, where many of the youths live.
He said: “It’s where I live too, but I like to keep it local and it’s inspired me.”
The estate received national coverage in 2011 when 21-year-old painter Andrew Jaipaul was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack by a gang of up to 20 youths.
Jahaziel pointed to drug trafficking, sexual abuse, robbery, murder, unemployment and broken homes as blighting the area.
He added: “This song is a social commentary describing the darker side of the community, which many within it want to escape and many outside of it would rather ignore.”
The song and video feature Jahaziel’s uncle, Maxi Priest, whose 1990 hit ‘Close to You’ reached #1 in America.
Eden is run in partnership with The Tollington Parish churches, and volunteers live in the communities they work with.
James Aidoo, a 26-year-old musician also volunteering with Eden, said: “Jahaziel often raps during congregation.
“It’s always very fitting, and we rap with the young people generally in our work.”
Jahaziel’s new album, ‘Heads Up’ will be released on November 19.
